History

John Haynes began a five-year apprenticeship with Mercedes-Benz GB at its Brentford head office in the early 1960s.

John’s training included periods in the Mercedes-Benz UK’s SL and saloon car repair workshops, re-conditioning departments for auto gearbox, engine and axle units as well as a spell in the parts department.  He was awarded with the Mercedes-Benz apprentice of the year.  His training then moved him into the elite ‘600’ workshop set up by Stuttgart to deal solely with the flagship model type 600.   John stayed with ‘600’ as the only English apprentice then was appointed as the UK 600 service engineer.  In 1971 John moved from London to Sussex to be become the youngest Mercedes-Benz Service Manager of one of the UK oldest Mercedes-Benz agents.

A very interesting six years followed, working for a family owned Company instead of the Stuttgart controlled Mercedes-Benz UK concessionaires.

In 1977 John decided it was time to move back to his main interest which was diagnosing and repairing Mercedes-Benz cars and so started up his own one man workshop in Worthing.  This quickly extended to a team of five to include his son Stuart.

The passion for Classics was matched with the desire to know the new Mercedes-Benz models comprehensively. This has lead to the most extensive Mercedes-Benz tool collection and technical literature needed to carry out servicing and repairs to the highest standard.

Expansion inevitably followed, with younger son Simon joining the team.  A new site was acquired in Goring-by-Sea with purpose built workshops, a showroom and enough floor space to accommodate long term restorations, specialist body repairs and a dedicated Mercedes-Benz parts department.

As the business grew, so did the company’s reputation – something John and his highly skilled workforce have worked tirelessly to maintain through their attention to detail and insistence that everything they do is 100% right.

Today, with a 20 strong team and customers as far as Asia, Australia and America, John Haynes Auto Technics is one of the largest and most highly respected independent Mercedes-Benz specialists in the country.
